Scaling Biochar: Strengthening Our Carbon Removal Portfolio with AtlantiCO2

We are pleased to announce a multi-year offtake agreement with AtlantiCO2, a Brazilian developer specializing in biochar carbon removal (BCR). AtlantiCO2 is currently building several facilities to convert various biogenic feedstocks - including yard waste, sugarcane bagasse, peanuts, and coffee husks - into durable biochar.

BCR is widely recognized as the reliable and cost-effective segment of the engineered carbon dioxide removal (CDR) market. With thousands of projects globally and trusted methodologies and standards covering the entire lifecycle from feedstock sourcing to pyrolysis and soil application, BCR is a core component of our portfolio. It is a viable, marketable solution that provides a strong hedge against other CDR methodologies.

The foundation of AtlantiCO2 lies in its founders' decades of experience in environmental markets and manufacturing. We identified a strong strategic alignment based on the key decisions the team made early on:

  • Securing a massive feedstock supply: They secured long-term, high-volume access to various feedstock sources. The feedstock is scientifically tested and analyzed with local academic partners, proactively eliminating eligibility issues.

  • Adopting a standard early: AtlantiCO2 partnered with the Puro.Earth standard and registry from the outset. Designing a project against a recognized standard ensures quality alignment and efficiently establishes the full Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) chain.

  • Building a brand: The team collaborated with a leading coffee brand to deliver its initial carbon credits.

  • Developing several facilities in parallel: This strategy of having multiple locations, feedstocks, and setups provides redundancy and eliminates "single point of failure" risks.

Ultimately, we recognized a strong synergy with the AtlantiCO2 team regarding the price dynamics of the CDR market. Their perspective reflects a grounded understanding of market realities that we believe will remain competitively viable for the foreseeable future.
